Description
A Staffordshire pearlware ‘Tythe Pig’ group.
This charming satirical figure has a rare decorative bocage, with 8 petal flowers heads, normally found on John Dale pieces.
This is a good example of this particular group, the base retains it’s original good colours from when it was manufactured with bright swirls of red and blue. The figure is from what is known as the Patriot Group.
The figure depicts the farmer, holding a pig with other produce of bushels of corn, 2 pigs and a basket of eggs and his wife holding a new born baby meeting the vicar of the parish . The Church rented land and the common practise was to levy a ‘tythe’ as part of the rent. The group captures the moment when the Farmer’s wife offers the baby to the Vicar as part of their produce and that is why there is an indignant look on the Vicar’s face, which has been highlighted with two small pieces of clay, one on the right cheek and above the eyebrow to emphasise this (see photograph 4).
